Training Title: The Role of Media in Peace Building Updated on April 15, 2014

Duration: 4 days

Needless to say, communication plays a significant role in shaping not only public taste but also individual and social endeavours. Over the years, we also have observed Media playing a “watchdog” role for our communities. For example, having regard for the ecological question we can advocate to develop simpler lifestyles, we can push to educate ourselves to practice more justice, peace and respect for entire nation, as well as getting more deeply engaged in sustainable development.

In a post conflict situation, the local media can play a major role in preventing the conflict from recurring. The public relies on the media to separate facts and tangible realities from assumptions and spin, to provide a reliable account of what is really going on. Audiences should receive an intelligent account that enables them to form their own views. However, it is believed that the media largely failed to deliver on this promise. In this training, the main aim will be to explore how local media behaved in news reporting on this Peace building situation.

Social networks are giving birth to a new way of learning and thinking, with unprecedented opportunities for establishing relationships and building the sharing of ideas.   The rise of social media undeniably provides an opportunity for African traditional media to enable citizens to bring about social change and peace building as the continent is torn with conflict and war. African journalists can improve the quality of content and relevance of reporting by leveraging the strengths of new media technologies with African traditional wisdom and values.

This workshop is an opportunity to share our experiences and to learn more, to plan a better collaboration in our common efforts for justice, peace building and conflict resolution. This meeting might be an opportunity for a better understanding of ourselves, for seeking new ways to face up to present reality… Who are we? What are our aspirations, our hope and dreams?

The theoretical framework of this training will focus on peace journalism which emerged as a new concept and a set of pioneering ideas developed in order to criticize the preferences given by mainstream journalism around the world to war, violence and propaganda, to causes promoted by elites and establishments, and to simple and polarized victory/defeat reality construction. The training will try to deal and distinguish peace journalism as opposed to war journalism.

The major objectives of the training thus are to:

  1. How Media can be used in peace building and role of journalists
  2. Understand and apply basic Concepts of Peace Journalism
  3. Explore the modals that journalists apply in propaganda and conflict reporting
  4. Unveil how propaganda works in any conflict to bamboozle their audience through their reporting
  5. Investigate the importance given to incidents based on their ideologies and interests.

 

Training Fee

The training shall be led by a team comprising of two (2) professionals from the International Leadership Institute. The total training fee will be USD 1,200.00 per day to be which stands at USD 4, 800.00 (to be paid in Birr) for the four days session. This fee is inclusive of all applicable taxes.

International Leadership Institute, Addis Ababa, in collaboration with the University of Greenwich, London, would like to invite researchers and specialists in Africa to present papers at the Joint International Conference. This is due to take place from December 12-13, 2013.
The conference is the fifth of its kind and is fast establishing itself as a leading forum on critical issues in economics and governance in Africa and their implication on the Global Business. Speakers will be selected from researchers at the International Leadership Institute, the University of Greenwich and other leading institutions and organisations. Keynote speakers will present the latest findings from their research into dynamics of economic and business realities in Africa within wider global context. The conference offers a unique opportunity to meet and discuss current issues with the most prominent researchers working in Africa.
This conference is being organised under the theme Investment Trends in Africa and the Global Economic Recovery. It will take a timely look at the impact of the global financial crisis on the economies of Africa and highlight new opportunities formed by the new world economic order.

SPECIAL INVITATION  FOR A BRAIN STORMING MEETING REGARDING  THE ILI-UoG ALUMNI Dear Esteemed Graduates of ILI and UOG

 

As  ALL of you might Know, we regard each and  every one of you as a very important Ambassadors of the ILI. We  strongly believe that there are many ways each of you can help the ILI.  You can help  by being a bridge between the ILI and the business community in particular and the rest of the society in general. Similarly, there are also many ways  the ILI can be of help to you. In short, there is  a dire need to foster our relationship for mutual benefits. We need one another.

 

We want to know how you are doing?  And we also like to get feedback  on what you as ILI and UOG graduates and  stakeholders would like the ILI to be? In short,  we have a vested interest  in your future career as well as your wellbeing.

 

As  many of you might remember, I have tried to assemble a number of  active ILI-Greenwich Graduates with the hope of establishing  an ILI-UOG Alumni by the end of 2012. We have met  several times with the voluntary  members of the  steering Committee. We have even gone as far as drafting and  defining the aims and objective of  the Alumni. We had started with enthusiasm. However,  during the end of 2012, many of the members of the steering Committee who were overloaded with different tasks and  activities were unable to meet.

 

In short,  due to many reasons,  the  members of the Ad Hoc Group that  initially expressed interest to be in the steering Committee some how did not meet as much as I had wanted them to meet.  Contacts were even lost.

 

It is against this background that I now  am  releasing  this Special Invitation  through our ILI website as well as via  this  email  to  those who were in the Steering Committee and to each and every one of you ( at least those whose emails have not bounced back)  to come for a brain storming meeting to  exchange ideas  and  brain storm on some of the ways forward regarding the establishment of our Alumni.

 

Please show your interest, dedication and commitment by showing up at the meeting.

 

The date of our brain storming  meeting will be on Saturday July 6, 2013   at 3pm (15hrs) at the 4th floor of the ILI building-conference Hall.

The Journal of International Business and Leadership (JIBL), is an academic journal of the International Leadership Institute (ILI) that is published bi-annually. JIBL is multidisciplinary in scope, and interdisciplinary in content and approach. As such, it welcomes scholarly works not just only from business and leadership disciplines such as finance, management, marketing and leadership, but also from other disciplines including HRM, public administration, political science and economics. When submitting manuscripts to JIBLS, authors should ensure that their manuscript has not been previously published, not accepted for publication elsewhere
and it must not be under review for publication elsewhere and should not be submitted to another publication entity during the JIBL review process.

 

Manuscript Preparation and Submission Requirements


Format

Manuscripts should not exceed 20 pages (including tables, figures, and references) written with double line spacing, Times New Roman font, 12 points. Book reviews should be 3 to 5 pages.


Style


JIBL’s editorial style conforms to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) (5th ed.). So, all manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the form and style as outlined in the APA.

 

Author Biography


Submission of manuscripts needs to be accompanied with a brief autobiography of the author/s indicating academic qualification, professional affiliation, current position, mailing address and area of research interest. Author biography should appear immediately before the Reference section.
